Linux – the Green option

Friday, June 20th, 2008 | business, linux | No Comments

The rising costs of energy and an increased focus on climate change are becoming increasingly important to business. Network World recently published the results of independent testing they commissioned on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SuSE Enterprise Linux and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and found that Linux was up to 12% more power efficient. There was quite a bit of variation in the test results – the original article provides a well balanced discussion of the tests which should be interesting to any IS/IT Manager with an eye on energy costs. The reviewers noted that configuring systems running either Linux or Windows is not as straightforward as it could be. Projects such as the Green Linux Initiative should hopefully continue to enhance the green footprint of Linux. For those interested in a technical analysis in some of the potential and pitfalls in the path to greener Linux – LinuxWorld’s Green benchmarking has some interesting reading.
